The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (the Treaty) has established a Multilateral System (MLS) of Access and Benefit-sharing.
Regarding the coverage of the MLS, Article 11 of the Treaty specifies that the MLS shall include all plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA) listed in Annex I that are under the management and control of the contracting parties and in the public domain.
Since 28 October 2013, Japan had become a contracting party of the Treaty and Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has notified the Secretary of the Treaty of inclusion of the collection which are mmaintained by the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) into the MLS.
Herewith, the following total 38,960 accessions of PGRFA have been included in the MLS and distributed from the NARO Genebank under the terms of Article 12 of the Treaty.
- 17,948 accessions since 18 July 2014
- 12,705 accessions since 18 September 2015
- 8,307 accessions since 22 November 2016
