Kirishima azalea [Rhododendron obtusum (Lindl.) Planch.]
Explanations
- Origin
- This group divides into 'Edo kirishima' and 'Kurume azalea'. 'Edo kirishima' is reportedly hybrid of R. kiusianum× R. kaempferi native to Pref. Kagoshima.
- 'Kurume azalea' relates to 'Edo kirishima' , R. sataense and R. kiusianum. Recently some cultivars are observed a few characters which are typical of R. macrosepalum and R. ripense.
- Characteristics
- Shrub, 1-2m. Inflorescense 1-4flowered. Corolla diameter 2-5cm. Flower cluster 1-4. Flowering time is from the middle ten days of April to the middle ten days of May at Kurume. In full flowering, canopy is fully covered with flowers. Leaves oblanceolate to broad ovate, 1-5×0.5-3cm.
- Variation among cultivars of 'Kurume azalea' is larger than that of 'Edo kirishima'.
