Explanations
- Origin
- This group relates to R. indicum and R. eriocarpam. Both species are native to Japan. In the early part of Syowa period, native cultivars are crossed Belgian azaleas for new flower colors. And around the Kanto district, new hybrid cultivars are popular with people.
- Characteristics
- Spreading, much-branched shrub, to 1m. Inflorescense 1-2-flowered. Corolla diameter 3.5-5cm.
- Cultivars for bonsai have various flower colors. Flowering time is from the late ten days of May to the middle ten days of June at Kurume. Germination of shoots is before flowering.
- Leaves dark green, shinning, hardy leaf fall, lanceorate to elliptic, 2-4×0.5-1.5cm. Leaf color of garden type cultivars change to beautiful red in winter.
