Tomaru originated Niigata Prefecture and has been established in 1870s. This breed is thought to originate from crosses between Shokoku and Daitomaru imported from China in the 16th or 17th century. This breed was designated a natural monument of Japan in 1939.

The cock of this breed has a prolonged crow with a baritone voice, and the crowing continues for about 18 seconds.

Plumage color is self black. Comb and wattles colors are dark red. Beaks and leg are black. Skin color is white. This breed is large and Body weight of male is over 3.5kg. Broodiness is low.
