This breed seems to descend from chicken imported from China about thousand years ago. Many Japanese breeds have relation with Shokoku during development of their breed and inherited long crowing and/or fighting characters. This breed has a very graceful appearance, with abundant, long hackles flowing over the shoulders. The saddle and tail feathers are also abundant and long, reaching the ground. Part of the population is white in colour with black breast.

This breed was designated a natural monument of Japan in 1941.
