Origin
Theaceae. About 80 species or more of evergreen shrubs and small trees of east Asia.
Characteristics
Leaves are alternate, simple, toothed and lethery. Petioles are short. Flowers are usually showy, bisexual, solitary or clustered, axillary or seeming terminal, Peduncles are generally with 4-5 bracteoles. Sepals are 5. Petals are 5(-8-14). Stamens are many, jointedinto a short tube below and also united with petals basally. Ovary 3-5 celled. Fruit is a capsule with to several seeds.
Uses
Camellias are popular ornamental shrubs especially outdoors. The genus is the source of tea of commerce and of valuable seed oils.
