Distribution
Sri Lanka, mainly in the dry zone.
Key characteristics
Rhizomes, lowest panicle node almost always has only one branch, always in open habitats usually seasonally dry. Purple pigmentation of spikelets very common.
Potentially useful traits
Drought tolerance, pest resistance since it evolved in an area with high diversity of brown plant hoppers.
Notes
Closely related to O. eichingeri and O. officinalis.
