AA
Chromosome number
Diploid, 2n = 24
Distribution
Tropical Africa
Key characteristics
Long bifurcate ligule (O. barthii has short rounded ligule). Rhizomatous. Grey/green leaves distinguish it from commonly sympatric diploid O. punctata and O. barthii.
Habitat
Invades rice field, rivers sides where it can grow in deep water.
Potentially useful traits
Bacterial blight resistance has been transferred from this species to rice.
Notes
