Key characteristics
It is distinguished from the closely related Latin American species, O. latifolia, by larger spikelet size >7mm and broader leaves >5cm. Grows to 4m. Perennial.
Habitat
Generally open savannah habitats, in wet areas at margins of ponds and lakes. Many occur as floating mats in deep water. Grows in white (nutrient rich) and black (nutrient poor) water.

This tall plant with wide leaves has been suggested as useful for forage, biomass production
Notes
Population studies suggest this is a large ecotype of O. latifolia with which it shows continuous variation for key morphological characters.
